Edgar D. Millard, III, 86, of Toms River, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, August 10. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Riverton, NJ, he graduated from Cinnaminson High School in 1946. He lived the rest of his life in Toms River. He was employed by Toms River Schools as a custodian and the maintenance department for 35 years, where he was fondly known by staff and students. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Island Heights, the United Methodist Men and the O.B.'s Wednesday lunch club. He was a volunteer as a teen with the Riverton, NJ Fire Company, and after his marriage was active with the 4-H Clubs of Ocean County and Caregivers of Central Ocean County. He worked for many years at the United Methodist Church of Island Heights annual House Tour, and helped with other church functions. Ed loved working in his garden and workshop, and was a great handyman. All his life he was an avid traveler and had visited every state and many countries. A "Gentle Giant," he was loved by all who knew him. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas in 1997, and Tom's wife Mary Kaye in 2002.
Edgar is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Joan; son David and daughter-in-law Jann of Toms River; daughter Ruth and son-in-law Don DiMarzio of Island Heights; grandchildren, Lauren and Sarah Millar, Ross and Ali Millard, Dan, Jenna and Anna DiMarzio; sister, Gerry and brother-in-law Len Keister of Bayville; brother-in-law Harley Winship and wife Barbara of South Toms River; sisters in law, Ruth Mayer and Cathy Schenone of Whiting: dear friends Mike and Jane Steele of Bedminster, NJ as well as their children, Jason, Mitchell, Charlotte, Lily and Frances Steele, who have all been the loving family of Ross and Ali since 2002. Edgar was also beloved by many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 10:00 am, Wednesday, August 14, at the First United Methodist Church of Island Heights, Ocean Ave. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Van Dyke Hospice, c/o Community Medical Center, Route 99 Route 37 West, Toms River, NJ 08755, or the charity of your choice. Private cremation is under the direction of Kedz Funeral Home, Toms River.
