Obituary of James Coe Ewin

James Coe Ewin, 87, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2016 surrounded by family. Jim was born and raised in Washington, D.C. He graduated from the University of Maryland where he was a pole vaulting champion. He was proud of his work as a systems engineer in the Bell Telephone Systems where he earned 9 patents. He served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Newton, NJ, following many years as a charter member of the Middletown United Methodist Church, serving there in many positions including lay leader. He had a love for learning, especially in the areas of photography (Did it flash?), genealogy, geology, and world history. He enthusiastically shared his knowledge lecturing at the kitchen chalkboard, and asking grandchildren, "What did you learn today that I don't already know?" Jim enjoyed canoeing and spelunking and shared these interests with many Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops. He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America. He was predeceased by his parents, James L. and Dorothy Coe Ewin of Washington, DC, and his brother Bill Ewin. Jim was always a gentleman, devoted to his family. He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Gail Pascal Ewin; two sons, Jim and wife Marjie, Jeff and wife Kim; two daughters, Lorie and Audrey; 11 grandchildren, Chris, Stephanie, Jessica, Michael, Courtney, Whitney, Ryan, Taylor, Becca, Corianne and Brian; 2 great grandchildren, AJ and Constantine; and a sister, Dottie Meggers. He will be buried at Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington, DC. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 111 Ryerson Ave., Newton, NJ 07860 on Saturday, April 23 at 11:00 am.
